Network quotations in Pakistan are difficult to compare because suppliers itemise them differently, and the largest cost is the one that varies most between sites. Here is what actually drives the number.
The cost is in the cable, not the box
This surprises people. A managed switch and a couple of access points are a known, comparable cost. Running cable through a finished building is not.
The variables that matter:
- Does containment already exist? Existing trunking or conduit can halve the labour.
- Is the building finished? Chasing walls and making good afterwards is skilled work and it is slow.
- Construction type. Solid brick and reinforced concrete — normal across much of Pakistan — is dramatically slower to route through than partition walls.
- Run lengths. Distance to the comms room per outlet, not floor area.
- Working hours. Occupied premises frequently mean evening or weekend work.
A supplier who quotes your network without walking the building is guessing at the single largest cost in the project. That is why two quotations for “the same” job can differ by a factor of two and both be honest.
What a proper network installation includes

The three items in bold are the ones most commonly deleted to hit a price, and they are the ones you will miss most.
Why labelling is worth paying for
Almost every network fault we are called to in Pakistan traces back to the same origin: nobody labelled anything and no drawing exists.
The switch is rarely the problem. What costs money is the two days an engineer spends tracing an unlabelled bundle to work out which of forty identical grey cables goes to the accounts office. You pay that cost every time something goes wrong, for the entire life of the installation.
Labelling and documentation add roughly one engineer-day to a typical office installation. It is the highest-return hour in the whole project.
Certification versus continuity testing
These are not the same thing and the distinction matters.
A continuity test confirms the cable is connected end to end. A cheap tester does this in seconds.
A certification test measures the cable’s actual performance against the category standard — attenuation, crosstalk, return loss — and produces a per-run report.
A cable can pass continuity and fail certification. It will work fine on a lightly loaded network and produce intermittent, maddening problems under load. Insist on certification results as a deliverable. It is also the only evidence that lets you hold anyone accountable later.
Sizing the switch properly
Two numbers matter beyond port count:
PoE budget. Every access point, camera and IP phone draws from it. A switch sized exactly for today’s access points will not carry the cameras you add in year two, and replacing a switch is far more expensive than specifying headroom initially.
Uplink capacity. If every desk is gigabit and the uplink to the server or router is also gigabit, that uplink is your bottleneck the moment several people move large files.
Wireless in Pakistani buildings
Vendor coverage calculators are built on assumptions about open-plan offices with partition walls. A great deal of commercial and institutional building stock in Pakistan — and particularly in Peshawar and across KPK — is solid brick or reinforced concrete with thick internal walls.
Signal a calculator predicts will cover four rooms frequently covers one and a half.
Practical guidance:
- Start at one access point per twenty to twenty-five concurrent users, then adjust upward for construction
- Survey rather than model for anything beyond a small single-floor office
- Do a post-installation coverage walk in the rooms that matter, not in the corridor
- For exam halls, boardrooms or anywhere reliability is genuinely critical, plan for higher density than the general figure
Segmentation: build it in
Guest WiFi on the same network as your finance systems is a real exposure, and it is startlingly common in offices that grew organically.
Separating guest, staff, surveillance and management traffic onto their own VLANs at installation is straightforward and adds very little cost. Retrofitting it across a live network later is disruptive and usually triggered by an audit finding rather than by choice.
If you are putting CCTV on the same infrastructure, this stops being optional.
Getting quotations you can compare
Ask every supplier to itemise:
- Survey — included or not
- Cable category and estimated total run length
- Containment — new, existing, or making good required
- Certification testing — included, with report provided?
- Labelling scheme and documentation deliverables
- Switch model, port count and spare PoE budget
- Access point count and how it was determined
- Configuration scope — VLANs, failover, QoS
- Out-of-hours working, if the premises are occupied
If one quotation is dramatically cheaper, the difference is almost always in items 4, 5 and 8. Ask specifically.
If you are fitting out a new office
Bring your network supplier in while the fit-out is at planning stage, before partitions go up. The cost difference between running containment during a fit-out and retrofitting it into a finished office is substantial, and the same applies to power provision for the comms rack.
